Trocadéro

This walk to the Trocadéro in the 16th offers a varied selection of Parisian museums. Art or fashion, Asian antiquities or naval history: choose carefully which ones to visit, since to see them all would be exhausting.

Distance: 1.25km (0.75 mile)

Time: Half a day

START: Place de l’Alma

END: Palais de Chaillot

Point to note: The time above includes the walk and two museum stops.

Start at place de l’Alma, and look out for la Flamme, a counterpart to the flame of the Statue of Liberty (gifted to the US by France). Then head west up avenue du Président Wilson. On your left, at no. 13, is the Palais de Tokyo 1 [map], built, along with the nearby Palais de Chaillot, for the 1937 World Fair and now home to two museums.

The Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (www.mam.paris.fr; due to have re-opened in autumn 2019 following renovations; Tue–Sun 10am–6pm; free except exhibitions), the municipal collection of modern art, is notable for Matisse’s La Danse (1932) and Raoul Dufy’s Fée de l’Electricité (Electricity Fairy) mural.

In the opposite wing is the Site de Création Contemporaine (www.palaisdetokyo.com; Wed–Mon noon–midnight). Described as a ‘laboratory for contemporary art’, it focuses on young artists. There is also a fashionable restaurant here, Monsieur Bleu, see 1.
